I am thinking about learning Tai chi and I was wondering how effective it would be in a fight against a every day person who would be swinging punches all over the place ????|||As an older student of Tai Chi I can assure you that Tai Chi Chuan can be deadly. My own Master teaches Tai Chi for the health aspects but frequently points out the martial aspect as a memory aid. In private he demonstrates its use in grappling, fist fighting and knife fighting. I concur with other contributors of this forum- one needs a teacher well versed in the combat nature of the art in order to be effective, preferably one with actual experience and not simply competition. Sifus Rudy Curry and Novell Bell and others in the NYC area meet this criteria and regularly participate in competition/demonstrations of combat nature and have also been personally involved in the self defense aspects. My own Master, Melvin Conley, derives from the same experience, tradition and schools as Sifus Curry and Bell, one his teacher and the other a fellow practitioner and classmate. Master Conley is in regular contact with them and others around the country and regularly passes on his learning to his students-be it "health" or "combat". I count myself indeed fortunate to have such an experience instructor-both for "health" and for "combat".|||I Agree with the youtube guys, Sifu Rudy Curry %26amp; Black taoist, living in NYC would certainly provide a scenario where a everyday person could be swinging punches all over the place, which could prove deadly, allowing opportunity to use your Tai Chi in self defense. I imagine after more than surviving in countless ordeals would give one confidence to know Tai Chi Chuan is The Supreme Ultimate thereby allowing skilled practitioners to emerge unscathed when attacked! Quite effective indeed!

The reality is that many Taichi-chuan (TCC) practitioners and their teachers no longer practice the art for combat, but for the health benefits. There are some TCC practitioners who still train in the martial aspect of the art, but they are in the minority.
Plus, TCC unlike the other hard/external styles of martial art takes a very long time to master to the level where you can realistically use it in self-defense. I would be very skeptical of a TCC practitioner's ability to defend themselves with only 10 years of training; 20 years, maybe if they actually train with someone who knows the combat applications.|||Guys on youtube like "Black Taoist" and "Sifu Rudy" sure think so. The practitioners in Chen Village in mainland China are really renowned for their ability to use it effectively in combat as well. But here in the West, it's really rare to find someone who can use it effectively in combat.|||Yes it is very effective if you learn it the martial way.

Good luck though trying to find a school that teaches the martial aspect of it if you plan on training in the US.|||Yes Taijiquan is very effective for selfdefense depending on the quality of training u recieve and how much time u put into it.|||yes, and yes. If you can find a sifu who knows and teaches the combat applications,|||if you have an instructor that can put it in to combat form then it's very effective
